Why the Little Things Matter: From the Pasture
There’s a saying that the grass always grows a little greener after a summer rain. Whether that’s true or not, one thing is certain, life on our farm is made up of little moments.
Some mornings begin before the sun has climbed over the trees. Others end with one last walk through the pasture as the light fades across the fields. In between are countless ordinary tasks that most people will never see; checking water troughs, watching newborn babies find their footing, trimming hooves, mending a fence, watching the birds swoop in and out of the fields, catching our girls playing restaurants with the animals, or simply standing quietly while a horse leans in for a scratch.
Those moments may seem small, but they are the foundation of everything we do.
At Alcovy River Farms, we often talk about strong bloodlines and quality breeding, and those things are incredibly important. Our animals are registered, and every breeding decision is made with intention. We believe genetics matter because they shape the future of a herd.
But genetics are only part of the story.
The care an animal receives every day—good nutrition, regular handling, proper hoof care, time spent observing behavior, and simply being present—is what allows those genetics to reach their potential.
That’s why you’ll often find Kent and David walking through the pasture, not because something is wrong, but because we believe the best way to know your animals is to spend time with them. A quiet walk through the herd can tell you more than any checklist ever could.
Our daughters are beginning to learn that lesson too. They may still be small, but they’re already discovering that caring for animals isn’t just about feeding them. It’s about patience, consistency, and learning to notice the little things.
Those are values we hope will stay with them for life.
As our farm continues to grow, we’re reminded that success isn’t measured only by ribbons won or pedigrees recorded. It’s measured in healthy animals, careful stewardship, and the satisfaction of knowing we’ve done our best every single day.
The work is rarely glamorous, in fact, it’s usually pretty messy, with a trail of mud found in our wake, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thank you for spending a little time with us From the Pasture.
Until next time, we’ll be in the pasture.
