At Alcovy River Farms, our miniature donkeys are valued members of the farm — admired for their charm and trusted for their protective instincts. While their small stature and friendly personalities often win people over first, miniature donkeys are widely recognized for their natural ability to guard sheep and other livestock. Their strong territorial awareness and instinct to confront unfamiliar animals make them highly effective at deterring predators such as coyotes and stray dogs.
On our 130-acre farm in Covington, Georgia, our donkeys share pasture space with our flocks and play an active role in maintaining a calm, secure environment. Unlike some guardian animals, donkeys rely on alertness, vocal warnings, and assertive behavior to protect the herd. Their presence alone can be enough to discourage potential threats, while their loyalty to the animals they bond with adds an additional layer of security.
In addition to their guardian qualities, miniature donkeys are intelligent, hardy, and surprisingly personable. They adapt well to farm life in the Southeast and require relatively low maintenance while offering both companionship and practical value. Whether serving as livestock guardians or companion animals, they bring both function and character to the pasture.
As our miniature donkey program continues to grow, availability updates will be posted here. We welcome inquiries from farms across Georgia and the Southeast United States looking for dependable livestock guardian donkeys raised in a responsible, working-farm environment.
